Dear Parents and Staff:

The administration of Sayles School would like to provide you with notification that five year re-testing radon-in-air will be conducted on Monday, February 22 – Thursday, February 25, 2021.

According to Connecticut General Statute 10-220(d), schools are required to retest for radon in air every 5 years following the initial testing. Ten percent (10%) of the rooms are re-tested, a different ten percent (10%) being tested each time.

EASTCONN will conduct the radon testing. To test for radon in air, small canisters containing charcoal will be placed in each of the tested occupied rooms that are in contact with the ground or over a crawl space. These canisters will be left in place for a minimum of 48 hours. You will be informed of radon test results and interpretations as soon as possible.

In the event that high radon levels are found, steps will be taken to correct the problems beginning with retesting of the space(s) in question. If radon levels continue to be high corrective action will be by methods suggested by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Questions or additional information may be directed to the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health Radon Program at (860) 509-7367 or https://portal.ct.gov/-/media/Departments-and-Agencies/DPH/dph/environmental_health/radon/pdf/CTSchoolspamphletpdf.pdf

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

William Hull,

Superintendent of Schools
